  • FMVSS Compliance Review Program

By law, the National Highway Safety Administration and Transport Canada are is required to issue specific safety regulations that all motor vehicle and mobility manufacturers need to conform to. These Federal and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS/FMVSS) are put in place to protect the public. NHTSA also provides a ratings system for consumers to use when making buying decisions about vehicles and equipment.

For the Compliance Review Program to certify whether a manufacturer’s vehicles are in compliance, documents are reviewed against specific sections of the FMVSS and then classified. A “Pass” indicates the standards in effect at that time have been met. The reviews are conducted by a panel of independent engineer consultants under the supervision of the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association. All submissions to the NMEDA Compliance Review Program are voluntary and all submitted data is confidential.

The NMEDA’s Compliance Review Program was started in 2009 to review current model year vehicles. This does not imply that previous model year vehicles are not in compliance. Mobility manufacturers can advise as to the compliance of previous model year vehicles.
